The following morning we checked out of the hotel and continued the further short distance south on Interstate 5 to connect across to Bakersfield.
While we were checking out of the hotel this customised car was parked in the entrance. Whether or not you like the personal artwork on the outside is one thing, but you have to love the orange furry interior ?!
The remaining drive to Bakersfield was quick and easy, with standard interior-Californian views – low sandy hills, these with a dusting of snow on the higher elevations
We collected the RV and due to heavy snow the previous day were unable to head to our planned first night destination of the Kern River Valley so decided to stay instead at a park in Bakersfield before heading straight to Death Valley once the roads were clear.
The RV rental company recommended a park in the city which they said offered good opportunities for walking the dog from the site. So we took their advice and stayed at River Run RV Park, on the banks of the Kern River.
Right behind the park was the Kern River which had a wide sandy trail – perfect for dog walking.
However, the riverbed is completely dry.
A little further beyond the RV park was this oil field with numerous active oil wells.
